Spindlefrog goes to London.

My creation

Tonight we have shetland, gotland and the introduction of "Sockie Spins" a superwash merino and nylon 70/30 blend. Its ever so soft and fluffy and will make excellent socks. Im liking this new fibre so will more than likely get more in.

Today a huge order arrived for me. I love getting parcels even if it is just undyed wool. Now I should have enough to last me quite a while and keep me busy. One of the reasons why I placed the order is to dye up a big batch of fibres to go down to London for Ally Pally in October. Ive been bouncing about with a huge grin for days because Alice from the delightful shop Socktopus asked me would I be intrested in them carrying my fibres! How freakin cool is that? They will be on her stall along with the fantastic range of sock yarns and fibres from..wait until you hear this....Spunky, Pigeonroof, Brooklyn Handspun and Chameleon Colourworks. Im besides myself with glee. I wont be able to see them sitting there with the fibre royalty because I will be in Barcelona at the time (with multi coloured paws no doubt). The rest of this week will be spent dyeing and getting the package all ready to be posted off. Happy happy me.

Spindlefrog is doing really well at the moment. Im having a blast doing it and never thought it would be as good as it is. Ive had some wonderful feedback from some lovely customers which really brightens my day and Ive even seen a good few of the fibres spun up.

Batts of Delight.

Here are some of the batts Ive been carding up on my new carder for the shop. Blimey its so much fun I dont know why I was all in a dither about buying one. Even my mum has had a good go and has created some lovely ones. My aunt on the other hand is rubbish but tried hard and thats the main thing.
As you can see Im still having a few photo issues. These ones are better than before so its a learning curve but they arent as good as I would like. Its fustrating the hell out of me because of the money I paid. Im very tempted to give up and go back to the old one but worry I will never get it sorted out if I do. Grrr.
Tomorrow I will spend the day dyeing. I have bought another big load of dyes to extend the colour range but havent been able to try them out yet because of work. But Im having a good few days off so I can play arround and have fun. One thing I will be dyeing is a selection for a shop in the US who will be stocking Spindlefrog fibre. How excitting is that??? I hope to get the order out by Friday so keep your fingers crossed the rain stays away.

Growing my empire.

Tonight I was going to have a nice big update at but I bought a new camera today and its just not playing nice. This is meant to be a better leaner cooler (more expensive) camera and so far its crap. Its changing the colours too much although the detail is ace. So you can have a really good close up shot of something you arent buying. Gah. I hope its just me and I will iron out the kinks. So my update has been delayed a bit. I have just listed this shetland though.
I have some lovely BFL & silk, some gotland, merino and silk hankies to go up as well. But I need the camera to take the picture I shoot rather than a pink version of it. Grr. Can you tell I am cross with it.
In other news I have got a drum carder on its way to me. YAY! I really can not wait. Batts batts batts all the way :0)

Going batty...

Just look at my lovely new fibre. Yes you, STOP right there and take a minute to just look at them. Arent they georgous? Im completely thrilled with them and keep taking them out to have a little squeeze. The top ones are from Wildcraft fibres and the bottom lot are from
warratahfibrecrafts's on etsy.

Falkland Update

This update had a Greek/Roman mythologic (is that a word???) slant with Pan, Venus, Aether, Demeter, Persephone and Flora taking a bow. I think Pan , left one on middle row and Persephones Return, bottom row middle one are my two favs. Some have already sold too which was bloody quick. Happy me. The corriedale is just having a bath now and will hopefully be listed tomorrow.

To celebrte my ONE MONTH Etsy birthday Ive treated myself to some Piegonroof merino and some mixed FeltStudio mini batts. I havent bought much fibre lately (doh) because of all the stuff I have but Ive always wanted to try Piegonroof stuff and to see how the merino feels. The only time I tried to dye some up it got slightly felted so I want to see how it should be. And the mini batts were just too cute to leave on the shelf. I really should be getting my parcel together for the UK spinners swap. Ive done a bit but not nearly enough shopping. I will get right on the case.

In other excitting news Ive placed a REALLY big fibre order. Yikes! It should be my September fibre for upates but Im a bit worried that it wont sell. This time I have gone for a few differint fibres to have a bash at and see how they go. Fingers crosse hey!

BFL Update

Ive been really pleased with how the shop is going. Im now one day away from my one month Etsy birthday and in that time Ive reached both of my little targets I set. I cant wait until next month. Ive been getting some really nice feedback and repeat customers which I am delighted about and Ive even seen photos of the fibre spun up. That makes me all smiley inside and I drag which ever family member is nearest to come and squee with me although they're a bit rubbish at that part.

Ive also been given some money to invest in Spindlefrog too. Excitting times ahead. Now Im having a long hard think about how to spend it. One idea is to buy a drum carder and make funky spinning batts with lots of bling and gliter. Or get a MUCH better camera or expand the range of fibres. Or spruce up the graffics in the shop and get some promo stuff. So much to think about. One thing I will be doing though is making the labels a bit more professional. That will be job number one I think. So watch this space....

There will be another update tomorrow (falkland) and wednesday (corriedale). I will post then...oh yes....

Spinners Swap is go!

Over to your left we have tonights update at the shop, This little lot is falkland, a really great spinning fibre. Ive got one kilo of corriedale to dye up and then I will need to buy some more fibre.

In other news Ive heard from my swappee on the Ravelry UK Spinners board. She has been out of the country for a while but is back now and ready to go. I cant wait to get her questioner so I can begin getting the parcel together. I love this part but always worry that my handspun isnt going to be good enough which is strange because when I recieve handspun Im always totally thrilled with it. Ive yet to met a hank I dont like. Handspun = charm in my book so I know I will love the yarn Im sent from my swaper.

Im going to have a little spin of the Rose Garden Alpaca in a minute as Im dying to see how it turns out. And I really must get back to doing some knitting especially as Ive got to go to work tomorrow so that will mess arround with my crafts. Grr to work. Yay to spinning/dyeing/knitting.

Tuesday, 19 August 2008

The shop update tonight was alpaca. I really love this fibre. This alpaca is not scratchy at all and this time Ive kept a bit for me. See the first one in the middle row? Well I dyed two the same. Its called Rose Garden and I'm dead pleased with how the colours came out. I think with alpaca subtle colours are best so I have kept it quite tame. Sam hates the smell of the roving wet so I think he will be more than pleased if they dont sell because then I wont want to dye anymore.

Today I dyed up a kilo of falkland and I had some help. Sam actually painted three of them and got quite into it and They have come out great. They are drying now but it could take a while because its so damp and cold here at the moment. This is meant to be summer but it certainly doesn't feel like it. Ive got a kilo of corridale just waiting for me too. But I might wait to do that. Or not..its so much fun. The shop is doing really well at the moment although Ive not had a sale for a couple of days Im getting alot of hearts which is nice.

Over on Ravelry the UK Spinners swap is underway but I havent heard from the person I am meant to be spoiling. I hope everything is ok with her but I really want to get shopping/spinning for it. Last time I had a blast and its nice because its not a huge group so you dont get lost in it.

I have finished spinning up the Wooly Treasure batt and it came out lovely but I havent got a photo of it yet. I will tomorrow if I think on. The other batt should be on its way soon and I cant wait to get it. But Ive not done alot of anything for a while unless its messing about with fibre and dyes...

Today BFL, tomorrow the world.

Well BFL and shetland today but we're still on for the world tomorrow. This is the latest update to and a few have already sold. Typically my favourite one has gone (artichoke in the top left corner) but Im still chuffed it sold. I should dye something specifically for me and not list it but when they are all done its too tempting. The next update will be either alpaca, corriedale or falkland and I havent made up my mind which it will be. I already have the alpaca so it depends on if the other two come by monday. The alpaca is lovely though, really soft.

Fluffy yummy fibres.

Here are two thirds of yesterdays dyeing adventures. Im really pleased with how well they came out and I know I said that yesterday but they look even nicer all braided up. Is it wrong to admire your own work so much> Hehehehe. Ive still got to get the shetland all ready but will do that tomorrow. These fibres though are already on and some have even sold. Cool hey? I know the last few days have been all about the shop but thats really all I have done. No knitting or spinning. I will write about something else when I actually do something else.

My hands are multi-coloured, just like a rainbow!

Lookie...see all the pretty colours? Yep my fibre order came today. The one I placed yesterday afternoon. It arrived less than 24 hours latter how cool is that. Im telling you will be getting alot more of my money. (Still no BFL though but Im hopefully of its imminent arrival). So today I spent the day dyeing up lots and lots of fibre. Most of it will go in the shop ( but some of the lovelyness will be mine to spin. For some reason there seems to be an awful lot of hot pink and Im not sure why, its not like I even like the colour. That is shop fodder for sure. These photos were taken straight after the rinse so they look a bit sad and floppy but will fluff up great when they dry. My favourite part of the dyeing process is photographing them all together and seeing the rainbow of colour. I cant wait.

More mail lovelyness.

Today the post man bought this to me. Three batts from . Theyre made up with wool, sari silk, merino, bamboo and gliter and weigh 4.6oz. And I think they are lovely. I cant wait to spin them up and I really want them on the wheel after the woolytreasure batt but should spin up more bamboo for the swallowtail shawl. I need more wheels and/or bobins and defo more hands/time.
Talking of the woolytreaure batt its looking fab. Im about half way through and so I think I might have it done by tomorrow at the latest. If, of course, I can stop looking on ravelry and etsy. Im so delighted Ive contacted Jae the owner of the store and Im getting a custom batt made for me. Its a copper sea one (if you look through the sold items its in there) and is a georgous mix of sage green and golds. Im super excitted about it.
My etsy shop has had another sale today YAY! Two more rovings will be headed out very soon. Still no BFL though so instead Ive made an order for some more fibre this time some gotland, grey shetland, white shetland, faukland and corridale. Quite a mix and I think it will be fun trying them out to see how they take the dye and spin. I have also ordered a light tent from ebay to be able to take better photos. Its only a cheapo one but should be good.

What a lovely batt!

Today I woke up to this in the mail. Its a georgous batt from Its called "Rustic Cabin" and looks so much nicer in real life even though the photo was pretty cool too. Even my fibre blind family have admired and stroked it.This is the first of many batts I will be getting from here because not only is it freakin huge it is also breath takingly beautiful. So much so that I had to begin spinning it straight away even though Ive had the headache from hell. It will become a two ply yarn about 4ply weight (fingering) if it all goes according to plan. It feels like going to a childrens party spinning it, joyful, funny and colourful. What a treat.
I also got my lavander sachet supplies in the post as well but not the BFL fibre so no dyeing today. Hope it comes tomorrow because I want to play with the dyes again.
Im still knitting on the swallowtail shawl but last night I ended up with one extra stitch on one side. So I tinked. Then I had 2 extra. Tinked again. 4. Tinked again, 2. So I knitted it together with another stitch. Now I have the right number but the pattern might (doya think?) be off a bit. How magical can blocking be? Guess I will find out. Note to self: LIFELINES!

Swallowtail lovelyness.

And to your right you will see the beginings of the Swallowtail shawl. 6 repaets of the budding lace pattern and all is well. Its quite difficult getting a good photo of this one because of the colour and the shine so when I say its nicer in real life it really is. Im not fibbibg. Honest. Bamboo doesn't seem to have any give which is a bit of a challenge knitting with it and so I have made a desission to bead ala The Yarn Harlot rather than purl 5 tog *shivers*. Ive got a packet of silver beads arround somewhere so silver the beads will be. I hope to get this one finished before the next ice age unlike the kimno shawl and the dk alpaca seraphim which are still on going after about 10 months on the needles. But now as I have discovered re-runs of Chicago Hope on Zone Romantica I am knitting for at least 2 full hours a night.

The alpaca that I dyed yesterday is still not dry which isnt really a wonder as its lashing down here and you can feel the dampness in the air. But I really want to braid it up nd make it look all pretty. I must learn to be patient but its not really my default setting.

Also Im waiting on a few parcels that I thought might come today but havent. A kilo of BFL to dye up (yay) and a few bits for the shop ( , packaging supplies and so on. And also some yummy batts I got of etsy. But nothing. Not a bean. Another round of the swap on the UK Spinners board from Ravelry is just about to begin and our swap partners will be assigned on the 11th. The last one was excellent (well for me anyway) as I got some great things so Im really looking forward to round two.

Ohh the bamboo

Just look at that... Im so chuffed because this is bamboo yarn that I dyed and spun (and then dork like put label from my shop on it even though I wont be selling it but because it looked cute). I really like the colour it came out as, a soft bright green. Its all very spring like. It weighs 50 grams and is 200 yards but I still have another 150grms to spin.
Last night I begun knitting the Swallowtail shawl with it and its looking fab. Im trying really hard to use some of the handspun in my knitting because thats the point right? And handspun has that certain panache that millspun just cant seem to get. It seems more alive and fun. Well to me anyway.
In other news Ive been doing some dyeing for the shop (afore mentioned). Today was alpaca, mostly fine grade which is super yummy and not a bit scratchy in the least, but also one braid of super fine which is heavenly. No really really nice *nods*. I am tempted to not put them on etsy and keep them all for me because I like them that much. But then I also like how nice they look photoed on the computer. They are drying now but the weather is looking a bit glum so it might take a while. Im pleased with the colours as well because I had a go at mixing them up a bit instead of just straight out of the pot. I figure if I dye what I like then if they dont sell thats cool, more for me.

See? Thats what I mean...

Grrr the photos have gone all wrong. Thats why blogger drives me insane.

Anyway more fibre from

Pretty non? Im pleased with how they have come out and am more than happy to spin them myself if they dont sell. Today fibre, tomorrow the world.

New Shop

How bad am I at this blogging thing? Yep pretty bad. I think the reason is because I dont like how the photos are added to the blog its just too slow or something. Im sure I can overcome it though and really will try harder.

So what have I been doing in the months and months of silence? Well spinning and knitting and not much else (which is really bad because I have a billion things that need to be done, grrr to work and college and life really).

Ive just finished these socks which I really like as I dyed, spun and knitted them. All my own work

Its the first time Ive ever been able to do all the steps.

Yep Im dyeing things now too and have opened an etsy shop like everyone else in the world. Heres mine

Its all about the fibre. More stuff will be added as I go along but Ive already had 3 sales amnd am rightly chuffed. Want to see some of the fibres? Ok

Spinning mad.

Finally today I was able to take a couple of shots of what Ive been spinning recently. Lately when its been bright enough for me to take photos Ive been stuck in work or Im off and its dull. Im still not great with the camera but the day light certainly helps. I would love one day to be able to have a lovely blog just like Broklyn Tweed but I would also like to talk to the animals but I dont see either happening anytime soon.

This first one is from a batt I got from at esty. Its called Magpie and has merino, tencel, viscoes, sequins and sparles in it (and other things I have forgotten). I just love this one. It is going to become a scarf either knitted or woven along with this. Which is a batt from Loop also on etsy. This one is alpaca and firestarter I think. Its a bit difficult to see the lovelness of this though in the photo. In real life its all subtley sparkley and yummy. Ive also got another batt turned fibre from Loop that is also black alpaca but this time with huge clumps of brightly coloured sari silk blended in and together with a tencel/merino blend from Spunky in Pink Elephant and some feather yarn I got on ebay a scarf I shall make. Im reaally looking forward to seeing how I get on with it because in my mind it is already fab.

This one is romney from Spunky in the Joshua Tree colourway. This one is a total favourite. I love the colour, I love the texture, I love the whole thing. I loved spinning it too. Overall a real winner.

Finally for now I aslo have this one. Its another Felt Studio Uk batt called Sunrise and has everything in it including camel. It has spun up so soft and squishy. This one will

one day be mitts but I want to get some orange wool to do the cuffs with.
In other news Im getting pretty excitted about Wonderwool Wales that is only 2 more sleeps away. This will be my first ever fibre festival. Ive always been jealous of all the great events for knitters ans spinners in the US such as Maryland S&W, Rhinebeck and the Stitches shows but for once Im so pleased that Im also going to have a bit of festival crazy. Ive got a shopping list as big as my arm and have planned on buying just what ever takes my fancy (maybe even an alpaca :0)) and just having a great time. Its about a 2 1/2 hour drive from me and the car has filled up with folks already so I dont think there will be alot of room left for other stuff but I still am excitted. I want to look for a wheel because Im a bit fed up with mine (Kiwi). I also want some Posh Yarns stuff and some alpaca to spin. And some fybrespates fibre and, and, and.......

Fibre, fibre, fibre...

So my idea to keep this blog up to date lasted all of one night. The reason for it is my brother (who is lovely and also reads this blog even though I told him not to) stole my camera wire. Took it. It was gone. He is bad. And I thought a blog with no photos is just too boring for words even if it is only my brother who reads it. But I have it back so I can post something tonight.

Its been a fibre week for me. I have got my spinning mojo back after about six months. Don't know where its been but I'm glad to see it again. Originally the spinning vibe lasted just about long enough for me to buy a wheel and some fibre and have about 3 tries, get bored and not touch it. Ive got a second hand Ashford Kiwi that seems to be a great wheel. To be honest I haven't got enough of a clue to know what is what but I like it. And others have said its a good first wheel and they do have a clue.

So what have I been spinning? Well after the green BFL last week I spun up some purple BFL but it has barber poled in such and ugly way I am not even going to photograph it. It is ugly and needs to be punished. I had a go at chain plying that was terrible but I understood the concept, you know small mercies and all that. But look here is a wool (or yarn, bah) that I do like....

Its from a bat off esty by Feltstudiouk. Its called "Tender" and has merino, Falkland, tencel and sparkle and is super soft and lovely. I tried to get thick and thin with alot of texture in it because Ive been a bit bored of aiming for smooth yarns. Its not set yet though so still looks a bit messy. But how cute is it? The bats came today. Let me show them to you.

These are all fro feltstudiouk and I think have the same ingredients in them. The top on is tender, then we have sunset and lastly that's jolly.

And quickly this is what I'm doing now. Its SW merino from fibre bought of fyberspates and I'm aiming for a sock weight but who knows what it will end up being :0)

Yay for I have made it work.

Right then I am joyful because I have managed a post and added a photo and so my blogging life can begin. Pay attention.

I want this to be an account of my crafting do-dahs and what nots. Obviously there will be the odd photo of my dogs cos they are so cute (see previous post). I am all about the fibre at the moment. Last Christmas I began knitting (what was I doing with my time and money before that?) and shortly after the spinning came and lately the weaving. I tell you I am a hairs breath (and a RSPCA warning) away from getting sheep. When I'm not knitting I'm looking on the Internet about knitting and paying scant attention to my course. Which by the way is finishing very soon, in like 4 days if I can cobble together 3 years of catch up essays by Friday. Hmmm no chance.

Just lately I have got back into spinning. I bought a drop spindle in April and the a wheel in august but didnt really use either and maybe spun about 4 or 5 things on it. But for some reason I have become all excitted again about making my own wool (sometimes I say yarn like the Americans but it sounds so wrong in my head and hey its my blogg). Let me show you the first stuff I did, there it is at the top of this post. Wonder how you get it to be here which is where I want it hmmmm? Anyway its BFL 2 ply spun as thin as I can get it which isnt really that thin. It was done on an Ashford Kiwi which is fab for what I need it to do.
Hmm now got it to move down a bit. Must have a look at the how to section of blogger.

Oh all going wrong.....

Well after forgetting all about setting this up I have realised that I want a blogg and had to press loads of links to get the password back.

Im really not sure of how to work this but lets see how it goes. Yay I have managed to add a picture. Just so you know that is one of my doggies. She is the beautiful Meg. Im sure I will post more photos of her and Jim and Tag too. Because I have the cutest dogs ever and everyone should be able to share my doggie joy.
